BYON = Bring Your Own Neighbor to the Neighbors for More Neighbors Kickoff Party on August 10

The community is invited to be part of a solution to today’s housing and climate crises.

Asheville, NC – Do you enjoy hanging out with your neighbors? Do you have a neighbor you’d like to be better friends with? Bring a neighbor with you to the Wedge Brewery at Foundation on August 10th to celebrate good neighbors and you could both win free prizes! Regional environmental organization MountainTrue is launching a new pro-housing program called Neighbors for More Neighbors WNC in response to the severe housing shortage in our region and the climate change crisis. Healthy communities exist within the context of a healthy environment – and right now, both are threatened.

A free kickoff party for this new program will be on Thursday, August 10th from 5 – 7pm at the Wedge Brewery at Foundation. We invite everyone who celebrates neighbors, attainable housing, and walkable communities to come out and share your vision for a welcoming future for Western North Carolina! The event will feature games, interactive elements, inspiring speakers, the chance to win prizes, and more.

Neighbors for More Neighbors WNC works to foster convenient, walkable communities with enough housing choices of various kinds to provide homes for all our friends and families. There is a housing crisis across the country, with many hard-working families unable to find an affordable place to live. There is also a climate crisis, with greenhouse gas emissions threatening the stability of all our planet’s ecosystems and biodiversity. As our communities build more homes for our neighbors, we want those homes to be close to schools, jobs, and services to reduce vehicle emissions and also to protect the farms and forests that exist on the outskirts of our towns and cities. This program will build grassroots support for policies and projects that encourage the creation of this kind of housing, like eliminating parking requirements, incentivizing infill, and streamlining approval processes for development along transit corridors.

“By welcoming the development of homes of all shapes and sizes in our own backyards, we also welcome new neighbors who we can share our parks and schools and sidewalks with,” says Susan Bean, Housing & Transportation Director for MountainTrue. “We are excited to be part of a solution to today’s housing and climate crises by simply sharing our spaces!”
