We’re excited to share that MountainTrue’s Director of Housing and Transportation, Susan Bean, recently had an opinion piece published in the Asheville Citizen-Times. In it, Susan highlights how Asheville and other communities can build back smarter and better in the aftermath of Hurricane Storm Helene by embracing missing middle housing.
In her op-ed, Susan explains that adopting policies to allow for more “missing middle” housing—like duplexes, triplexes, and townhomes—can help provide affordable housing options, reduce urban sprawl, and protect our natural lands and waterways. This approach not only addresses the region’s housing crisis but also fosters resilient, walkable communities better equipped to withstand future storms.
